Bone Marrow for Krishna Das

Krishna Das of St. Louis, wife of Dr. Pradip Das, was recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She has been undergoing chemotherapy at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. She desperately needs bone marrow transplant since it is the only way for cure in her situation. She is patiently waiting for a match on bone marrow donor. Doctors were not successful in finding a match from her siblings. We request every reader of this newsletter to come forward and test his or her blood for possible donation. Please let your friends and neighbors also know.

Abc-forum.org Launched

A new website www.abc-forum.org has been launched that will act as a platform for all the Assamese people here in Bangalore to interact, share their views and thoughts with the rest of the Assamese community and also to connect to the Assamese community around the world. The idea to launch such a platform was started by some of the senior members of the fraternity like Mr. Dilip Bharatee, Mr. PC Barua, Dr. Gogoi.

Sankardev Jayanti Celebrated with Gaiety in London

The 556th birth anniversary of Sri Sri Sankardev was celebrated on last October 2nd, 2004 under the auspices of Asam Sahitya Sabha, UK chapter. People from all over the UK and Assam attended the function. The function began with naamprasanga and ended with a cultural program. The stage inside the hall was tastefully decorated under the Asam Sahitya Sabha pennant on the top and below the dais a fresh waist-high portrait of the saint.

Second Quarterly ASA Meeting Held

The second quarterly meeting (2004-2005) of Assam Society of America was held on October 10th in New Jersey in the home of Kavita and Ritumani Sharma. Many members of the Society in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania attended in person while many members outside the region called in using a conference call facility. The meeting was chaired by Sanjib Bhuyan, President of Assam Society of America. The following individuals reported to the meeting on the topics listed against their names.

Flood Relief Concert in New Jersey

 New Jersey (September 18, 2004) - Community members of Greater New York Metro Area under the leadership of Purndar Sarmah, Pallav Bordoloi, Sanjib Bhuyan and Jukti Kalita participated in a night of enthralling Indian music concert to raise much needed funds for reconstruction for the victims of recent flood in Assam. Among those artists who showcased their talents include Ms. Gayatree Sarma of Guwahati, Mr. Rabin Goswami of Mangaldai, Mr. Sankumani Sarma of Guwahati, and Guruji Surendra Katthulla of Hyderabad who were supported by Mr.

Flood Control in Assam

Unless appropriate steps are taken, Assam will move inexorably towards a deep crisis: the recurrent problem of flooding and its myriad of devastating effects. Last summer, the ferocious flood of 2004 hit hard the river basins of Brahmaputra and Barak. It was a rude awakening and a grim reminder of Assam’s unfortunate geotectonic positioning on the surface of the earth. Every summer, a ritual monsoon brings devastating flood waters to the doorsteps of the people; the poor villagers especially suffer immense loss.

NSF Scholarships

 The National Science Foundation has awarded Jugal Kalita, an associate professor of Computer Science a grant of $395,920 for the period 2004-2008 under its program for developing sophisticated US workforce with skills and expertise in the fields of Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering.
