image001.jpgThe premier show of the Assamese movie "Prem Joubonote" was held in Cinema 2 of Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, Washington, USA, on September 13, 2008. For the first time, the premier show of an Assamese movie was organized in the USA. Prem Joubonote is being produced by Vavani Sarmah, a Non-Resident Assamese (NRA) and directed by Loknath Deka of Assam with assistance of Vavani Sarmah.

Menaka PP Bora Assamese traditional dance and folklore in British museums

menakaflyer1.jpgI take this opportunity to introduce my new ongoing dance project for Posoowa e-magazine. The details of the project are outlined below. I have also attached the official flyers. The main idea is to introduce and elucidate the contemporary relevance of Indian traditional dance and literature (in 2008 the focus is on Assamese traditional dance and folklore) in the national museums of Britain.

Snehalaya: from scourge to life, from darkness unto light

image0021.jpgThe train came to a standstill after several hours. It was total darkness outside; I still knew that we were hours from Guwahati. I was sitting by the window trying to get some sleep. I had a difficult time sleeping - the excitement of the impending event was tremendous. I never thought that this train journey from Dibrugarh to Guwahati would be so memorable. As the train rumbled on slowly, I began to recollect the previous day’s events.

Jugal Kalita inducted into Millionaire Club

july2008-3.jpgJugal Kalita, Professor of Computer Science, was recently inducted into the Millionaire Club for obtaining more than a million dollars in contracts and grants to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Jugal’s areas of research are artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing and bioinformatics. Jugal has published more than fifty refereed papers in his areas of research. He is advising or has advised 10 Ph.D.

Will  outsourcing harm India and also the USA?

In the current US presidential debates, one of the agenda items is to stop outsourcing and how outsourcing is harming the US workers. I wonder if any of us have some answers. Of course, much has been written about how it would help the global corporations and also make the US competitive while helping developing countries’ workers earn a decent salary (though about one-tenth [or maybe more] of the corresponding US worker.)

Tweedie at the Systems Ecology Lab in the University of Texas at El Paso and Dr.

The Brindabani Bastra of Assam

The Brindabani Bastra exemplars from Assam, woven from the 16th through the 18th century, measuring 120 cubits long and 60 cubits broad, are rare silk textile fragments depicting scenes from the life of Lord Krishna in a floral, naturalistic and preciously elegant style. They are preserved at the Blythe House, part of the British Museum.
