Standout Siblings Graduating!

Standout Siblings GraduatingArup Sarma

Arup Sarma, son of Girish and Minakhi Sarma of Overland Park, Kansas (USA) is graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a double major in Computer Science and Engineering, and Mathematics and with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Arup is one of the top students in the 2008 graduating class. He is also a Vice President of the MIT chapter of the Tau Beta Pi. While at MIT, Arup was actively engaged in research in the field of computer science and computational neuroscience. One of his research papers, titled “Context-based Speech Recognition Error Detection and Correction” has been published in the Proceedings of the Human Language Technology: Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics, pages 89 – 92, 2004. The other research paper, titled “Recognizing Expressions in a New Database Containing Played and Natural Expressions” was published in the Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, pages 1220 – 1225, 2006. Very recently, he has also co-authored a research paper on computational biology, which has been accepted for publication in an internationally recognized journal “Science”.

Following graduation, Arup has decided to join the Pritzker Medical School, University of Chicago for a dual degree program (MD and PhD) in Medicine (Neurology). Arup will start his MD program and research for his PhD in Computational Neuroscience from this summer. The entire expense for this dual degree program will be financed by the University’s NIH sponsored fund under the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP).

Arup possesses an outstanding record in academic excellence. Right from elementary school, Arup was a straight “A” student, class valedictorian and received several awards and recognition at the local, state, regional and national levels. For undergraduate study, he was accepted at Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Stanford, Harvard and MIT, creating a pleasant dilemma in choosing a school.

Arup’s sister Nandini Sarma is also equally talented and intelligent. Although she did not exactly follow her brother’s footsteps, she did proceed by creating her own footsteps.
