DU Students talk to Space-man

Dibrugarh University had a very successful Space Talk with Mike Finke on Friday 12.45 PM IST. Michael Fincke, popularly known as ‘Mike’, is in his second historic space mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

For Assam, Mike is the beloved Assamese son-in-law astronaut. The ISS is a joint project among the space agencies of the United States (NASA), Russia (RKA), Japan (JAXA), Canada (CSA) and European Space Agency (ESA).

NASA, as a part of its effort to spread knowledge of space exploration, is encouraging interaction among students and the astronaut. Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS) , an international think tank of non-resident of Assam and North Eastern region of India, interacted with NASA and organized this event. Please find below an email communication on the successful completion of the event

"Thank you very much for your help and cooperation for successful completion of the space talk with Dibrugarh University. We are also thankful to Mr. Rajen Baruah for continuous contact and effort. It was a wonderful experience for the university. The weather over here was very good, sunny bright. Around 700 people were gathered in the place; that is all of them were sitting in open sky, outside. I took all the initiative. At around Indian Standard Time 12:15, we got a call from NASA for a pre programmed discussion and rehearsal with me and other students, confirmed our presence, and our arrangement. Exactly at 12:45 Indian Standard Time, NASA established the connection with Dr. Michael Fincke. He talked with us for 10 minutes (approx.). The entire program was covered by the media, all newspapers and TV channels available here. Thanking you " — Bobby Sharma, Dibrugarh University.

Rajen Barua adds from Houston: "Dibrugarh University had a very successful Space Talk with Mike Finke on Friday 12.45 PM IST. Mike’s voice came out loud and clear and all the students responded very smartly. I was fortunate to be connected by Cell Phone to listen to the whole conversation. Talked with the VC and congratualetd him and all in DU after the event. Thanks to Satoshi Yasuda of ARISS, Japan for making it smooth and successful. There was good media coverage. The highlight is that they not only completed all the questions and answers but one student also sang  a piece of an Assamese Bihu Song to Mike listening to which Mike replied, "Bor Bhal Lagise dei". Overall it was grand sucess. DU will publish a detail report. DU also took video of the event."
