Dr. Sanjib Bhuyan to address NYU Global South Asia Conference

sanjibbhuyanFirst Annual NYU Global South Asia Conference will be held on February 14, 2009 (conference home page: http://sites.google.com/site/nyuglobalsouthasiaconference/Home). This conference seeks to bring together students, academics, and professionals from the tri-state area and beyond who have a vested interested in promoting and advancing the study of South Asia.  The conference will focus on South Asia’s position in a new, globalized world, specifically regarding the topics of economic development, politics, and culture.  Each theme will be given two sessions: one composed of a speaker or panel from the professional world and the other of a speaker or panel from academia. The Global South Asia Conference will provide a forum to facilitate dialogue and education on South Asia in a global context.  It will also seek to create a sense of community amongst students, academics and professionals focusing on South Asia in New York and in the tri-state area. The conference will be held at the NYU Kimmel Center (www.nyu.edu/kimmel.center).

Dr. Sanjib Bhuyan, Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food & Resource Economics at Rutgers University, New Jersey is one of the invited speakers in the session titled “Economic Challenges and Prospects in South Asia.” He will be speaking on the impact of economic liberalization on the Indian the agricultural sector and related matters, such as food security and poverty in rural areas.  Dr. Bhuyan is from Titabor, Assam and is a graduate of the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) and a Cottonian.  He is actively involved in community work and was the President of the Assam Society of America during 2004-06.
