Book release function at Assam Bhawan, Mumbai

A book release function was held at Assam Bhawan, Mumbai on 22nd February, 2009 to release Rothindranath Goswami’s latest Assamese book “Mumbai – Sagar Simonat Roi”. The book was released by renowned filmmaker Padmashree Jahnu Barua.

Mr. Trinayan Handique gave a brief account of Mr. Rothindranath Goswami’s literary contribution and mentioned his journey during the last 25 years from the pages of ‘Mouchaq’, the Assamese children’s magazine, to the present. Sri Debasish Sharma, ACS and Dy. Resident Commissioner of Assam Bhawan, Mumbai, spoke on the occasion and highlighted a few of Sri Goswmai’s achievements. Releasing the book Padmashree Jahnu Barua said that Shri Goswami’s writing has unique descriptive style and every paragraph reflects the emotions and spirit of Mumbai. To illustrate the writing, he read out a few paragraphs from the book. Shri Barua also recollected his initial struggling days in Mumbai and said that the spirit of Mumbai had always attracted him. Speaking on the occasion author Shri Rothindranath Goswami recollected his journey to Mumbai in his college days as an attendant to his ailing mother and after a decade he was in the same city for his official assignment. “The name has changed from Bombay to Mumbai, but the spirit remains same,” he said. He also announced that the sale proceedings during the book release function would go to Deepsikha Cancer Care Foundation. Renowned actor Ms. Piku Sarma chaired the book release function. The function was held in a jam-packed hall and the leading actor of Balaji Telefilms Ms. Panchi Bora, president of Shreemoyee Mahila Samiti, Ms. Bina Saikia, General Secretary of Assam Association, Mr. Deepen Rakonwar, Renowned Cancer specialist Dr. Tapan Saikia and many others graced the occasion. A book reading session was held on this occasion.

The book, “Mumbai – Sagar Simonat Roi” is a collection of articles on various topics on Mumbai. This book has included 30 pieces about Mumbai, dealing with the subjects such as rideing on local trains to the celebrations of Dahihandi, strolling on Juhu Beach, exploring concrete cityscapes and green spaces, appreciating cultural life, searching book stalls and attending book reading sessions, and studying six sigma and dabbawalas, walking Dharabi slums as well as the tourist spots of Mumbai including Mani Bhavan. The book contains one article for the use of cancer patients who comes all the way from Northeast for treatment in Tata Memorial Hospital. The writer, during his stay in Western Lines for 8 years, frequented Prithvi Theatre and its festivals, about which the book included two write-ups. This book “Mumbai – Sagar Simonat Roi” has been published recently by Lawyer’s Book Stall, Guwahati, a leading publisher in Assam. Author Shri Rothindranath Goswami is a geologist with Oil & Natural gas Corporation, Mumbai.
