Assam 2004 Project HOPE

A Project Undertaken by Assam Society of America

Project HOPE aims to provide needy financial assistance to the B.D.S. Deaf & Dumb School, Kahilipara, Guwahati, Assam. It is located close to Jyoti Chitraban. The school currently houses one hundred six (106) resident and eighty three (83) non-resident students. The school has twenty one (21) teachers.

It is an institution for the visually and hearing impaired kids that can be afforded by the middle class in Assam. Though it is a government-undertaken institution, in reality, it runs on donation only. The kids served by the institution cannot hear, cannot talk or cannot see. No government fund practically reaches this institution. As a result, the students have to live with very limited resources.

HOPE will be just our little effort to bring a little improvement to their lives. Upon contact, ASA has been informed by the school authorities about their first priority needs though they have a long wish list (Read the letter from Shri Thakuria below) The list of urgent needs is given below.

Set up of in-line water filter (Aqua Guard) – minimum two Top of the dining table (marble if possible) Kitchen utensils – eating plates (80), frying pans (kerahi), serving bowls (gamla), spatula etc., as many as we can. Work area in the kitchen such as counter tops (as you find in every kitchen in the USA) One hearing aid system with sixteen users to be used in the classroom – it is a long time need of the students as they do not have a proper classroom. The bed frames as most of them are broken or surviving on multiple repairs – any number up to 80.

On behalf of ASA, the members in charge of this project are Dr. Mantu Baishya and Malabika Brahma as project coordinator. The member in charge of fund raising and maintenance are Mr. Utpal K. Brahma and Prakash Deka. A local Woman’s organization, Padmini Sangha (General Secretary Mrs. Mitali Kalita), Kahilipara, Guwahati, has graciously agreed to be our contact. She will be in the charge of the project locally in Guwahati. The Adviser to the Governing Body and Superintendent of Boys’ Hostel of the above said school, Mr. Khagendra Nath Thakuria has, on behalf of the school, expressed his hope and gratitude to ASA. He has stated that the school will welcome any help we offer. Mr. Thakuria is an honest man and a social worker - concentrates more on impaired kids as he as a father of one such kid in real life and personally feels the pain and struggle they face.

Hereby I request you all, members and non members: Please contribute whatever you can to support this noble cause. We on behalf of ASA assure you that every cent of your donation will be used on this noble cause. Your any
