ASA Meeting

Highlights of November 11 Assam Society of America Meeting.

1) Update on joint Assamese Get-Together: This group looked into holding a joint conference of all Assamese people irrespective of their organizational affiliation(s). After some initial probing into with some informal telephone calls the response was not positive for 2008. With that initial response the group felt there is extremely low probability for a joint conference next year and hence rather than wasting valuable time, we should move on with the preparation of Assam 2008. Like the last time, it’s preferable that Assam2008 be organized by independent members from the Assamese community.

The group felt that holding of a joint conference should be pursued in a more formal way and also to be communicated to a larger audience of Assamese. This will be discussed another time, to decide how to go about it.

2) Assam 2008: Utpal Borah and Saurav Pathak graciously accepted the Chair and Co-chair roles, respectively, for Assam2008. Possible sites for this event were discussed. It will be held in the NE USA and final location will be announced later.

3) Naamghar Small group: The subject of constructing a Naamghar in USA was brought up sometimes ago. No doubt it is a very good idea but also requires lot of planning, resources, coordination. So, it was proposed in one of the e-mails that we can serve the purpose of a Naamghar and do so immediately by forming a small group of people seriously interested in naam-praxanga. Nomal Dutta of NJ has offered to host the first meet at his house. Hopefully, this activity will be carried on with similar gathering at other residence on a voluntary basis.
