A new ASA Executive Committee was elected in August 2004. Here we present a short biography of each of the executive committee members for 2004-2006.
Mantu C Baishya, Member, Executive Committee: Mantu C. Baishya is currently working as a senior Structural Engineer at Kirkham Michael Consulting Engineers at Omaha, Nebraska. He is a registered Structural Engineer. He received his B.Sc. Engineering with Honors from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India in 1982 and M.Sc. Engineering from University of Roorkee, Roorkee, India in 1986. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado in 1993. He has published several technical reports and papers in the field of reinforced, pre-stressed concrete and concrete repair field both nationally and internationally. He was President of Assam Society of America for the years 2003 -2004. He is married to Silpi S Baishya, and has two daughters Mona and Shikha. His hobby includes politics, sports and finance.
Sanjib Bhuyan, President: Sanjib Bhuyan is originally from Titabor, Assam. He is married to Susan and has a 20 month old daughter, Mayashree (“Kuhi”) and a new-born son Avinav (“Avi”). His family in Titabor includes his mother, brother, sisterin- law, a nephew and a niece.
Sanjib received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Connecticut and MS degrees from the University of Connecticut (Agricultural Economics), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Agricultural Economics), and the Asian Institute of Technology (Rural Development planning). He completed his B.Sc.(Agri.) with distinction from the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.
Sanjib Bhuyan is currently an Associate Professor of Food Marketing and Policy at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Sanjib has over 7 years of successful research and teaching experience in the fields of industrial organization, cooperatives, and food marketing. His research work has been published in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Sanjib has made numerous presentations at various national and international professional conferences, and served in several professional, governmental, and University organizations in various capacities.
Kedar Bhuyan, Member, Executive Committee: Kedar C Bhuyan is an engineer. He has a Master in Science in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University in California and he has Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Institute of Technology, Varanasi, India. He was President of ASA during 1990-1992 and during 1998-2002. He lives in Mays Landing, NJ with his wife Dr. Ruprekha Bhuyan and two sons Rick & Nick.
Utpal Brahma, Vice President: Utpal is a resident of Burlington, NJ where he lives with his wife Malabika and daughter Deisha. He did his B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur (class of '88) and MBA from IIM Calcutta (class of 91). Utpal originally hails from Kokrajhar in Assam. Currently he works in New York Life Insurance Company in the MIS department. In his spare time Utpal likes biking, camping and any sports where he can sweat it out.
Ganesh Bora, Member, General Secretary: Ganesh Bora is a resident of Manhattan, KS and originally from Kampur (Nagaon), Assam. He worked in Agriculture Department, Assam; Asian Institute Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand and currently working as Research Scientist in Kansas State University (KSU), Manhattan, Kansas. He holds a Bachelor degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University, Jabalpur (M.P.), Master degree from AIT, Thailand and currently a PhD candidate in KSU, Manhattan, KS.
He has work experience in the field of Extension and Research for more than 15 years in India, Thailand and USA. He published many technical papers in peer reviewed journals, presented papers in national and international conferences and received two research and one extension award. He also wrote a few articles on science for The Assam Tribune. He has some Assamese poems to his credit and played hockey for his university in India. He was also involved with Assamese organizations in Thailand, Jabalpur and Raipur.
Sangeeta Duorah, Member, Executive Committee: Sangeeta was born and brought up in North Lakhimpur, Assam, later studied at Cotton College and Gauhati University. After moving to US, she obtained a Master's Degree in Elementary Teaching. During her stay in Connecticut, she actively participated in all community activities organized by the Assamese community in New Jersey area. She taught First Grade for a year in Connecticut, before moving west to California. Right now Sangeeta lives in the Bay Area with her husband Kaustabh and daughter Mugdha.
Probal Tahbildar, Member, Executive Committee: Probal Tahbildar, originally from Guwahati, Assam, was educated in Shillong and New York. After working for several years at Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ where he worked on research in Computer Based Testing and where he earned a patent on developing a system and method for automated testing of writing skills, Probal currently works as an Application Architect at Dow Jones & Company based in Princeton, NJ.
