Arangetram by Gayatri Deka (Dolly)

dsc_4777.JPGYoung danseuse Gayatri Deka enthralled the audience at the India International Centre on 5th October on her Arangetram -debut public performance. She performed for nearly two hours with precise movements and the promise of a brilliant career.
Justice Shri Mukunda Kam Sharma of the Supreme Court of India spoke on the occasion and remarked that she has the talent in high measure to be a great exponent of the famous dance tradition. The occasion was also graced by Guru Padmashree Saroja Vaidyanathan, one of the pillars of the dance form, who in turn taught Smt. Anuradha Venkataraman. Guru Saroja thanked the parents of Gayatri for their efforts.

Her dance recital included the traditional margam with Pushpanjali (an obeisance to gods and goddesses), Alarippu (an invocatory nritta piece), Jathiswaram (a nritta piece set to music), Shabdam (an abhinaya piece depicting Key episodes from the Mahabhartha), Varnam (the central piece based on Lord Krishna and his pranks), Shiva Stuti (a stuti in praise of Lord Shiva), Padam (abhinaya piece on Lord Krishna), Bhajan (a devotional piece on Lord Rama written by Sant Tulsidas), Thillana (the traditional concluding piece of Bharatanatyam repertoire).

The orchestra was played by Smt. Anuradha Venkataraman on Nattuvangam, Shri R. Keshavan on Mridangam,  Shri. V.S.K.Chakrapani on Violin while, Smt. Sathya Krishnaswami rendered the vocals. Ms Swapna Seshadri did an excellent job of the emcee.

Gayatri has been a disciple of the Tanjavur style of Bharatanatyam for the past eight years. She has received training under Dhruva Performing Arts which runs classes at Delhi Tamil Sangam. Gayatri has participated in lead roles in all her dance school annual days. She is equally apt in her performance of Bihu Dance and is a regular performer in the Rongali Bihu festivals of Assam Association, Delhi. She is a student of class -IX in Ramjas School, R. K. Puram. She is youngest daughter of Dr. Hareswar Deka and Smt. Madhumaya Deka. Dr. Deka is the General Secretary of Assam Association, Delhi.
