Month-long Exhibition of Assamese and Manipuri Culture and Heritage Educates Silicon Valley

History was made on the 18th of April, 2004 when for the first time in North America and maybe only the second time in the world, outside of India, that Assamese and Manipuri expatriates have put together a cultural extravaganza, showcasing the twin cultures of Assam and Manipur exclusively for other Indian ethnic groups and Americans. The event was held at the India Community Center (ICC: http://www.indiacc.org), Milpitas, California, USA.

Rongali Bihu – 2004 - in Minneapolis, USA

With the silver white snowflakes melting into
spring, the Assamese community of Minneapolis
and St. Paul celebrated Rongali Bihu on the 24th
of April, 2004 with all the traditional fun and
spirit. Geeti and Prantor Bora were the hosts who
beautifully organized the celebrations at "The
Pointe", Downtown St. Paul. The growing
Assamese population in the twin cities added to
the fun to this year's bihu.

Bohag Bihu Celebrations in Bangalore

Bohag Bihu, the advent of the Assamese New
Year was celebrated by the Assamese community
in Bangalore on the 1st of May, 2004 in the
Cambridge layout Community Hall, Mahanagar
Palike, Bangalore. The Assamese New Year,
which falls on the 14th of April, heralds the
month of Bohag and celebrates the essence of
spring, beginning with the celebration of Bohag
Bihu all through the month.

Rongali Bihu–2004 in Texas, USA

The Texas Assamese community celebrated this
year’s Rongali Bihu in Sugar Land, TX on
Saturday, April 10th, 2004. Geetanjali
Hazarika did a wonderful job in organizing the
event. More than 80 people from Houston,
Austin, Dallas and Louisiana attended the daylong
event. The day started with flag hoisting
ceremony and the song ‘Sri Moyee Asomir…’
followed by Easter egg hunt by the children.
